Opera opens browser-based app store

Immediately accessible by 100m plus users in 200 countries.

The Opera Mobile Store is available now for Java, Android, Blackberry OS, Palm and Symbian users.

No iPhone yet, although Opera has disclosed that it expects the store to eventually provide a browsable iPhone catalogue that provides links back to the iTune store.

This is a stealthy move by Opera, whose speedy browser has proved immensely popular with mobile users – it was downloaded a million times in two days by iPhone users last April.

The project uses storefront commerce technology supplied by Appia customised to each user’s phone, with a catalogue based on the phone’s operating system, local language and currency.

Opera Mobile Store offers both free and paid-for applications, with payments via debit or credit card and operator billing where available.

The launch follows a successful trial period in which more than 15 million users downloaded more than 700,000 downloads per day in February alone.

Opera reckons these metrics establish the Opera Mobile Store as a top ten mobile app store.

To support the store, Opera has also launched the Opera Publisher Portal to give developers access.

Meanwhile the Appia Developer Program provides partners with a ready to launch catalog of over 140,000 paid and free apps from more than 30,000 global application developers.

“The Opera Mobile Store presents a remarkable opportunity for mobile application developers to distribute localised content through a single, far-reaching marketplace,” said Jud Bowman, CEO of Appia.

“Appia is thrilled to partner with Opera to deliver an incredible storefront of applications to Opera users and beyond.”
