Olympics drives mobile TV in China

Sixty-six per cent of consumers with compatible handsets switched over to mobile TV to watch the games, says Telegent.

Telegent, which makes chipsets for some of the 21 million free-to-air analogue TV handsets in China, commissioned SINO-MR to survey mobile TV viewing habits before and after the Olympics took place.

Prior to the games 43 per cent of respondents with a mobile TV-enabled handset stated that they spent up to 30 minutes a day watching mobile TV, but during the games that figure increased to 58 per cent.

Before the games 36 per cent of respondents stated that the news had been their favourite type of programme to watch on mobile TV. This was followed by sports programmes (17 per cent) and films (ten per cent).

During the games these figures had been surpassed with an overwhelming 66 per cent of respondents stating that their favourite programme had been coverage of the Olympics.
