Merchants will be able to process card payments to iPhone from 7m strong crowd.

Barclaycard made NFC-based payments possible at this year's Wireless Festival in London via the PayBand, and now Germany's 16-day Oktoberfest event will accept mobile payments for the first time.

Munich-based startup Payworks has developed a point of sale iPhone app and Square-like card reader for merchants to user, which is powered by Austrian payment service provider PayUnity.

It's designed to support the small sellers touting hats, beer etc to the seven million guests that are expected to attend, as many prefer plastic ahead of cash.

Christian Deger, co-founder, Payworks, said: "For us as a Munich based company, it is a special honour that our technology is used at the Oktoberfest.

"We have an outstanding team, which has done a tremendous job during the last couple of months in order to support providers like PayUnity to realise their mobile payment projects."
