Offerpal pulls iPhone offers after 'scam' claims

Reviewing its policies for mobile offers - statement coming later this month.

Mobile advertising firm Offerpal has pulled a series of 'offers' from iPhone applications that sign users up to premium SMS subscriptions.

The decision came after the company was contacted by tech blog TechCrunch, which has been campaigning against such offers on Facebook.

In the Facebook world, offers are ad campaigns that offer users virtual currency or items in return for completing surveys or quizzes. When users haven't realised they're signing up to a premium SMS subscription service, it's rightly caused controversy.

"Recently, we have begun to test offers in a few mobile games and apps, in particular on the iPhone," writes Offerpal chairman and CEO George Garrick, in his response to TechCrunch's latest story.

"Offerpal has been participating in this effort at the request of a couple of iPhone developers and we have also just opened a direct dialogue with Apple to jointly establish standards and guidelines for offers in iPhone apps before any general rollout."

However, faced with the claim that ads in iPhone games like Tap Defense have been misleading users into signing up for PSMS subscriptions, the company has quickly clamped down.

"In the interest of being conservative and wanting to operate in the best interests of the collective mobile user experience, we have immediately removed the quizzes in question and any offers resulting in PSMS subscriptions from distribution pending a further review."

Offerpal says it will issue a written statement of its guidelines and policies concerning mobile offers on 22nd March, after consulting with developers, publishers and mobile platform owners.
