Ofcom makes premium rate statement

PhonepayPlus and AIME both agree it's a really good thing.

The UK telco regulator, Ofcom, instructed premium rate regulator PhonepayPlus to to take forward a number of the actions arising from its recent review of premium rate services. Broadly, they are:,

* A mandatory registration scheme for the PRS industry
* An expansion of its current Number Checker service to cover all PRS numbers, as far as possible
* A consultation on strengthening PRS advertising requirements to improve pricing transparency
* Consideration of creating complaints handling standards for the PRS industry

PhonepayPlus said it 'agrees that these measures, implemented carefully, could bring significant improvements to PRS regulation'. It is now revising its Code of Practice and will look at incorporating these recommendations into it.

Meanwhile AIME, the trade body representing UK-based premium rate companies, also backed the statement.

Its chairman Edward Boddington said: “ We are pleased to see Ofcom recognise the valuable work carried out by AIME in the planning of a registration scheme and we look forward to partnering with PhonepayPlus as we take the project forward.
