Obama strains US mobile networks

It's like New Year's Eve all over again as operators boost capacity for Inauguration Day.

Mobile operators in the US are bracing themselves for a huge upsurge in MMS, SMS and voice traffic today as people mark the inauguration of Barack Obama.

Trade body CTIA said that its members have been working "for months" to prep their networks in Washington DC for the extra load.

It has also issued a handy guide for visitors to the US capital this week, including the following pearls of wisdom:

- Text, Don’t Talk. "Text messages and e-mails can get through wireless networks when it is too congested to make voice calls."

-  Snap and Save, Send Later. "Sending cell phone photos and video require large amounts of bandwidth on mobile networks. Feel free to snap photos with your cell phone, but wait until leaving the Inaugural events to send them to friends and family."

- Have a Back-Up Plan. "Establish a rendezvous place and time to connect with your party, or try moving to an area where there is less congestion."
