O2 UK launches Litmus app store beta

Operator invites developers to upload apps to user community for reviews, ratings and feedback.

Litmus follows similar initiatives like the iPhone App Store, T-Mobile USA web2go and the Android Market in giving content providers a more open environment in which to present their wares to the public. If successful, parent company Telefonica will launch it internationally across its 24 markets.

Developers can either upload free apps or offer them for sale. O2 maintains that there's minimal interference - any app is welcome as long as it passes certain reliability tests. Litmus is not the first such initiative from O2. it launched a similar programme called Revolution in 2002.

More details can be found in a Q&A on VentureBeat with James Parton, who heads up Litmus.
