3GPP Integrated Mobile Broadcast technology subject of a new trial
O2, Orange and Vodafone will kick off a trial of a 3GPP Broadcast Solution called Integrated Mobile Broadcast (IMB) in October.
The trial will run for three months in central London and Slough, with Ericsson, IPWireless and Amdocs-owned Streamezzo providing the necessary infrastructure.
In short, IMB allows operators launch scalable mobile broadcast services (encompassing unicast and on-demand) using existing 3G Time Division Duplex (TDD) spectrum.
The partners say the pilot will demonstrate the capabilities of IMB in delivering both live streaming video and offloading traffic from existing 3G networks by broadcasting and storing popular content on devices.
In terms of technology, IPWireless will supply the core 3GPP broadcast technology, Ericsson will provide integration services and a media platform, while Streamezzo will provide user interface.
