O2 makes friends with MySpace

O2 will launch a mobile version of MySpace in the UK from November.

The deal comes around six months after Vodafone announced the first mobile iteration of the popular social networking site in the territory. The new roll-out enable O2 customers to view, track and contribute to their MySpace pages on the move. O2 says an internal survey found that the number one piece of content that its customers craved outside search was access to their social networking pages.

To encourage trialling, all O2 customers with a data-enabled handset will receive free data usage to the MySpace site on the O2 network throughout November and December. They will need to call 2112 to activate a free browsing link to be set up on their handset. Free access to MySpace will also be available from ‘What’s New’ on the O2 Active portal from November.

MySpace had 10.2 million unique UK visitors in August, according to the internet researcher Comscore. Further research has revealed that MySpace is now visited by one in every five Britons.

JP Sanchez, VP of business development for MySpace Europe, said, “Both O2 and MySpace are progressive companies looking to provide new and exciting products to millions of people. For MySpace users, their profile is at the heart of their online and offline lives – this deal will give them anytime, anywhere access, and keep them in touch at all times.”
