NYT executive editor sparks new Apple 'slate' rumours

Speculation around Apple's plans to release a tablet device have hotted up (again) following what's seemingly a gaffe by New York Times executive editor Bill Keller.

During an internal presentation to staff at the newspaper, Keller talked about new distribution channels for its content:

"I'm hoping we can get the newsroom more actively involved in the challenge of delivering our best journalism in the form of Times reader, iPhone apps, WAP, or the impending Apple slate..."

That's naturally set tongues wagging in the blogosphere, assuming that Keller's slip of the tongue is a sign that Apple IS working on a tablet, and that it's in negotiations with the NYT to provide content for it.

Which may be true. Or Keller may just be like the rest of us journalists, and assuming that the tablet is on the way based on existing tittle-tattle.

ME's view? We wish Apple would get on and announce it already. If only so we can move on to wild gossip about next summer's iPhone update...

In separate Apple tablet news, website Retrevo has conducted a survey to find out how much people would pay for the device.

Unsurprisingly, 68% of Mac users would pay more than $600 for an iTablet, but 64% of PC users would only buy it if it was less than $600.
