Voice giant makes move for touch and gesture UI specialist.
Nuance paid $102.5 million for Swype in a move that is expected to deepen its commitment to smartphones and tablets.
Swype's tech lets users swipe between letters on a touchscreen keyboard for speedier typing. It licenses its tech to some OEMs running Android and Symbian.
Interestingly, Nuance already plays in this space to a degree with its own FlexT9 predictive keyboard tech, which lets users trace and tap.
The speech-recognition giant has made significant inroads into the healthcare, in-car and enterprise sectors. But more lately it has pursued the mobile space with some success.
Last week's announcement by Apple that it would make Siri central to its iPhone 4S offering did wonders for the whole voice-recognition space – and it's Nuance that's powering the Siri service (although it's rarely spoken of by Apple).

Meanwhile Android also has its own voice recognition software – Google Voice Actions – and Microsoft is building speech recognition technology into the guts of its new Mango update for WinPho.
