Nokia has unveiled a new 'Java enhanced' edition of its Series 40 development environment and an updated SDK for its SNAP connected games platform at JavaOne, which kicks off today in San Francisco.
The announcements from the Finnish handset company are among the first in what promises to be a busy week for mobile at JavaOne, Sun's annual developer conference. The new edition of Nokia’s high-volume Series 40 platform includes implementation of the JSR-248 Mobile Service Architecture (MSA) specification, designed to provide a consistent set of Java technologies for high-volume mobile handsets.
JSR-248 was created in an attempt to alleviate the fragmentation problems brought about by operators and handset vendors implementing Java technology in different ways. Sony Ericsson unveiled the first JSR-248 compliant handset, the Z750, in March.
Nokia has also confirmed a 2Q07 release of the SNAP Mobile Client SDK (Version 1.4), which is essentially a suite of free developer tools, documentation, and sample code for creating connected Java mobile games.
This latest update is backward-compatible with previous SNAP SDK releases and 'offers more robust handling of networks that have less than optimum performance'.
