Nokia to take on iTunes

London event to unveil new music service on August 29th

Ahead of the European release of Apple’s iPhone later this year, Fortune is reporting that Nokia will next month lift the lid on plans to launch its own music download service to rival iTunes.

The new site will reportedly allow consumers to download songs to their PCs and transfer them to their mobile handsets. It is also said to work with both dedicated MP3 players, and even rival handsets.

No details are yet known of the labels or artitsts that will be available, though some estimate it will be as many as one million – though this is still a long way short of iTunes’ five million plus library.
