Nokia tipped for Android switch

Nokia is reportedly developing its first Android smartphone, and plans to unveil it this September.

That is according to a report from The Guardian citing industry insiders, which suggests that the touchscreen phone will debut at the Nokia World conference.

However, Nokia has moved quickly to deny the story, issuing this statement:

"There is no truth to this story whatsoever. It is a well known fact that Symbian is our platform of choice for smartphones."

It would be a surprising move if Nokia were to launch an Android handset, given its decision last year to take full control of the Symbian platform, and take it open-source to rival Android.

Also, there is the issue of whose app store would take priority on a Nokia Android handset: Android Market or Ovi Store.

In February last year, Nokia was said to be on the verge of announcing a Windows Mobile handset. That didn't happen, and judging by the company's denial, the Android rumour may meet the same fate.
