Nokia targets emerging markets with 'Asha' smartphones

Touch and type S40 phones designed with web browsing and social media in mind.

The Nokia Asha 300, 303, 200 and 201 are aimed squarely at the vast number of unconnected users in emerging markets – and at those who are moving up from old-school feature phones.

It's why they offer touchscreens with access to a browser and to apps, but also dual-SIM for users of limited financial means.

The browser, presumably based on the Novarra product it acquired in 2010, can compress web pages by up to 90 per cent.

Here's now they shape up:

Asha 303

2.6” capacitive touch screen with a QWERTY keypad, 1Ghz engine, 3G and WLAN. Social networks, email and IM are accessible from the homescreen. It also pre-loads Angry Birds Lite, Facebook Chat, Whatsapp messaging and the latest release of Nokia Maps for Series 40

The price be approximately 115 euros. It is expected to start shipping in the fourth quarter of 2011.

Asha 300

1GHz processor, Angry Birds Lite, 5 megapixel camera, a music player, FM radio, Bluetooth connectivity and can handle memory cards up to 32GB.  The price is approximately 85 euros, and is expected to start shipping in the fourth quarter of 2011.

Asha 200

Dual SIM, QWERTY, integrated social networking, email and IM, adding RenRen, Orkut and Flickr support. Support for 32 GB memory cards and 52-hour playback time. Approximately 60 euros, 4Q shipping.

Asha 201

Single SIM version of the Nokia Asha 200, Around 60 euros. Shipping in the first quarter of 2012.
