Downloads up by 50 per cent in the last three months

Nokia says usage of its Ovi content store is rocketing in Africa, with downloads and active users up by 50 per cent and 20 per cent, respectively, since July 1st.

What's more, a post on the company's blog says purchases from South Africa specifically have grown by 438 per cent since June.

Nokia attributes the growth to the introduction of operator billing for Ovi Store in the region, where credit and debit cards are less common.

It says the introduction of operator billing to an area results in 13 times as many sales on average compared to credit cards.

Nokia adds that the increase in downloads/usage in Africa is attracting more local developers to its platform, with developer registrations on Forum Nokia from Africans up by 60 per cent over the same three months.
