Warns N900 users off installing it.
There might not be any MeeGo-powered devices available to buy yet, but Nokia has just released version 1.1 of its new OS.
Nokia describes it as "a generic version intended to allow developers and device manufacturers to get familiar with the code and the capabilities of future devices".
It includes netbook, in-vehicle and mobile handset packages. The first will work on Intel Atom netbooks, while the handset release can be installed on Nokia's own N900, and Intel's Aava reference device.
N900? Nokia clearly knows that a number of N900 owners will be tempted to try out the OS on their devices, and is keen to warn them off.
"MeeGo is intended for as-yet-unreleased handsets and other mobile computers. Really. Don’t do it unless you’re a developer or a phone manufacturer."

The company also makes it clear that MeeGo 1.1 is a work-in-progress in terms of look and feel.
"The user interface is neither finished nor is it representative of what the experience will look like on future Nokia devices (we’re creating our own unique experience using Qt)."
Version 1.2, where the handset user experience software will be "pretty much complete", will be released in April next year.
Which means, presumably, that we can't expect any MeeGo smartphones to go on sale until the second half of 2011.
