Nokia raises the stakes in its Apple patent war

ITC complaint claims Apple is infringing with more than just the iPhone.

Nokia has stepped up its legal battle with Apple by filing a new patent infringement complaint with the US International Trade Commission, following its lawsuit earlier this year.

That focused on wireless technology patents allegedly used in the iPhone without the necessary licensing agreement with Nokia.

However, the new complaint takes the battle up a notch, claiming that Apple is infringing Nokia patents "in virtually all of its mobile phones, portable music players and computers".

The new complaint focuses on seven patents in the area of user interface, camera, antenna and power management technologies.

"Nokia has been the leading developer of many key technologies in small electronic devices," says its general manager of patent licensing Paul Melin in an official statement.

This action is about protecting the results of such pioneering development. While our litigation in Delaware is about Apple's attempt to free-ride on the back of Nokia investment in wireless standards, the ITC case filed today is about Apple's practice of building its business on Nokia's proprietary innovation."

Apple has yet to respond to the new complaint, while the ITC has not yet announced whether it will launch an investigation based on Nokia's allegations.
