Nokia pushes picture recognition technology

Nokia pushes picture recognition technology

What's the French for soufflé? Nokia may have the answer...

Nokia is developing a service that will send information and content to people's phones based on things they take pictures of.

The technology is called Point and Find and an article in The Sun newspaper says it could also be used to order goods from a real world store without having to queue up or to request more info about a famous landmark etc.

There's also a Shoot to Translate service based on the same technology, that would enable people to take a picture of, say, a foreign language restaurant menu and have on-device software translate the text back to them.

Boffins at the Nokia Research Centre have spent five years developing the system and it'll be another three years at least before it's made available commercially.
