Wannabe Spielbergs can get $10,000 and a screening at the Edinburgh International Film Festival
The project is a collaboration between Nokia and online video sharing site Vimeo.
Filmmakers will be asked to create a short film on the Nokia N8, first submitting their ideas at www.vimeo.com/nokia.
Eight of the best submissions will be shortlisted for the semi-finals and their creators awarded a budget of $5,000 and two N8s to make their film.
Nokia is pushing the photographic and video qualities of its N8 hard right now.
The device features HD-quality video recording with a stabilising function to help reduce camera shake, a microphone on both the front and the back, and Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 surround sound.
