Nokia exits Japan bar Vertu brand

The plot thickens regarding Finnish handset giant's rumoured Japanese MVNO.

Nokia has withdrawn all its devices from the Japanese market with the exception of its high-end Vertu brand, which is expected to form the basis for an MVNO launch in February.

With the company always having always struggled to gain a foothold in Japan it would seem the move is part strategic and part based on its stated need to cut costs is the current economic climate.

Reuters reports Nokia EVP Timo Ihamuotila as saying: "In the current global economic climate, we have concluded that the continuation of our investment in Japan-specific localised products is no longer sustainable.

He added that Nokia's Japanese business would concentrate on research, development and sourcing for the global market as well as specific projects such as the Vertu brand.
