Nokia deploys educational content in Latin America

Partnership with Telefonica looks to close the 'digital inclusion gap'.

The agreement is part of the Telefonica Foundation's Proniño and Educared programmes, which push communications technologies as an aspect of social development.

It also builds on Nokia's own efforts with mobile content in the developing world, currently spearheaded by its Life Tools initiative.

The first implementation of the Latin American agreement is planned for Chile, where Telefonica's mobile broadband and Nokia's Education Delivery software will be used to give isolated schools access to educational content, tools and services.

It will be rolled out to other countries in the region in the coming months. Nokia and Telefonica will also be working with local governments in Latin America to push the use of information technologies as economic drivers.

Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo said: "This partnership demonstrates the significant social benefits that mobile technology can deliver, reaching communities and children who previously had very limited educational opportunity in an inspiring and accessible way."
