Nokia: Comes without DRM?

Is Nokia considering a DRM-free option for its Comes With Music service?

Speaking at the launch of Comes With Music in Singapore, Adam Mirabella, director of global digital music retail at Nokia, told Channel News Asia: "We have dialogues going with all of our partners and Digital Rights Management-free is also on the roadmap for the future integration of 'Comes With Music'."

Clearly, this is a 'ifs buts and maybes' type statement, but it's still significant. CWM has been criticised for its reliance on DRM that limits song playback to the device and the PC it's tethered to. Having said that, offering potentially millions of DRM-free songs for a one-off fee would be impossible to get past the labels. If it were to happen, there would surely need to be a tweak in the basic offer.
