N8 smartphone required, but shortlisted filmmakers will be given a pair.
Nokia and video service Vimeo have launched the Nokia Shorts 2011 competition, dangling a $10,000 prize and Edinburgh International Film Festival screening as the carrot for filmmakers to enter.
As the name implies, the competition is all about short films, with a strong tie-in to Nokia's hardware. Entrants have to use the N8 smartphone to shoot their mini-movie.
Not very fair on people who don't have one, right? Actually, the contest won't discriminate. Entrants only have to submit an idea in the first round - they'll then be assessed by a panel of judges, with the submitters of the eight best ideas then getting a pair of N8s and a $5,000 budget to shoot their masterpiece.
It's not the first time Nokia has dipped its toes into the short film space - the company has made a habit of promoting its flagship camera phones through partnerships and contests of this kind.
Full details can be found at Vimeo's submission page.
