Nokia and Intel team up for 3D mobile virtual worlds research

Opening a research centre in Finland to find a third life.

Nokia and Intel have announced that they're co-funding a research centre that will explore the prospects for 3D virtual worlds on mobile devices.

According to VentureBeat, two dozen researchers will work for three years at the new centre, located at the University of Oulu in Finland.

"3D has the potential to revolutionize mobile and internet user experiences," says the university's Heikki Huomo.

The news hints that 3D interfaces and worlds could be part of Nokia and Intel's existing partnership on the MeeGo OS for high-end smartphones.

"3D technology could change the way we use our mobile devices and make our experiences with them much more immersive," says Nokia SVP and CTO Rich Green.

However, it will be interesting to see what Nokia and Intel's new research centre comes up with.
