No promo codes for 17+ rated iPhone apps

No promo codes for 17+ rated iPhone apps

New app rating system has thrown up a few issues when it comes to marketing content.

Apple blog TUAW has been looking into the implications of App Store's new app rating system in terms of promotional activity.

It seems Apple has removed promo code functionality from apps that are rated 17+, thus giving developers of such products a bit of a headache when it comes to drumming up sales (and offering journalists review copies, etc).

As TUAW points out, it could force developers down the route of ad-hoc promotional builds of their apps, or giving out iTunes gift vouchers to reviewers, both adding unwanted cost.

It's not just adult content that's affected either - Apple's ratings system categorises a whole swathe of apps as 17+ based on a wide set of parameters, including whether the app users browser sessions, bad language, or drug/Alcohol references.
