Mobile VoIP and messaging app Nimbuzz has been downloaded more than one million times on Nokia's Ovi Store, the company has announced.

The free app lets people talk over the network, while also hooking up various instant messaging services, including Skype and Facebook Chat.

The company says it's currently signing up more than one million new users a month across all mobile platforms, with 30% of its 15 million users considered to be active.

The app's success on Ovi Store is good news for Nokia, even if it adds to the feeling that currently, the most successful apps on the store are the free ones.

"We are delighted with the success we have seen from Ovi Store by Nokia," says CEO Evert-Jaap Lugt. "It is a great reward for the efforts we have made to offer our mass market application on both Nokia smart phones and feature phones."

Meanwhile, Nimbuzz has set its sights on global expansion, opening a new office in South Korea to offer a localised version of its app there.

The new Nimbuzz Korea division is working with Seoul-based firm YSK Media to promote the company's service to smartphone users, including its mobile and PC applications.

YSK will work on marketing campaigns and operator deals in Korea for Nimbuzz.

"The launch of Nimbuzz Korea is an aggressive move to secure ourselves a solid footprint for in Korea, with a view to moving into surrounding territories," says Lugt.
