Nexus One handset topped 80k sales in first month, says Flurry

Analytics firm compares Google's hero handset with rivals.

Google hasn't yet announced sales figures for its Nexus One Android handset, but analytics firm Flurry has been doing its best to fill the gap with its own estimates.

Having made headlines by claiming last month that the Nexus One only sold 20,000 units in its first week, now Flurry claims that the device continued selling at that rate, shifting 80,000 units in its first month on sale.

That's compared to Flurry's estimates that Verizon sold more than 525,000 Droid handsets in its first month on sale late last year, while the original iPhone sold around 600,000 in its first month back in 2007.

Flurry tells the Wall Street Journal that the Nexus One's launch in early January hampered its sales, due to coming just after Christmas.

"A lot of the people who were in the market for a phone, either for themselves or for a gift, already satisfied that demand," says VP of marketing Peter Farago.

However, we sense that Google has its eye on the longer game. Operators including Vodafone will begin selling the handset soon, while Google is expected to start selling more Android phones through its D2C site in the near future too.
