News Corporation invests in Comes With Music-style startup

Beyond Oblivion promises a "highly disruptive music service".

Rupert Murdoch is already a music mogul of sorts, as News Corporation owns MySpace, and its spin-off MySpace Music service.

However, the company has now invested in another music startup called Beyond Oblivion, which sounds like it could have a big mobile element to its service.

According to CNET, News Corporation has taken a small stake in the startup, as part of the latter's $10 million Series B funding round.

Beyond Oblivion's website says it won't be launching its service until the 10th October (10/10/10, geddit?), but its blurb hints at its plans:

"Beyond Oblivion is a radical, highly disruptive music service that combines the stickiness of a social network with unlimited life-of-device access to the largest music library on Earth, within a vast ecosystem where content owners are paid per-play no matter if the original music file was ripped, bootlegged or legally or illegally downloaded (in other words we eradicate music piracy)."

That mention of 'life-of-device access' is what makes us think there'll be a mobile element. In fact, it sounds a bit like Nokia's Comes With Music - a point also noted by CNET.

Meanwhile, a post on the company's blog talks about execs attending mobile industry conference CTIA earlier this year to "showcase the Beyond system on three screens to network operators and device manufacturers".

Intriguing stuff. We wonder if MySpace Music will be involved, given News Corporation's investment...
