News Corp's Daily iPad news app gets rumoured launch date

Jobs and Murdoch to take the stage on 9 December?

Speculation is hotting up around News Corporation's plans for its 'Daily' iPad news application.

We reported yesterday on The Guardian's claim that the Daily will cost $0.99 a week, and that News Corp is working directly with Apple on the project.

Now, well-connected tech blogger John Gruber has weighed in, confirming the claims made in that article, while adding more flesh to the launch plans.

Gruber says that 9 December has been pegged as the big reveal for the new app, potentially with Apple CEO Steve Jobs and News Corp boss Rupert Murdoch sharing a stage to announce the product.

He also suggests that Apple is working on "a new subscription billing option for apps — true recurring subscriptions — paid through your iTunes account", which will be used for the Daily, but then for other news and magazine apps too.

"My understanding is that the developers at News Corp building the app already have preliminary documentation on the new subscription billing APIs from Apple," writes Gruber.
