News Corp buys Making Fun

News Corp buys Making Fun

Low key swoop for San Francisco social gaming start-up.

Making Fun is just over a year old and was founded by John Welch (co-founder of PlayFirst) and Lee Crawford (co-founder of Twofish).

At PlayFirst, Welch has helped create titles such as the hugely successful Diner Dash.

The two partners initially made games to order for third parties – a Facebook game for amusement-park operator Six Flags, for example. They say they sold their company to compete more closely with the other titans of the space, PlayFish and Zynga.

Apparently, it already has three projects under construction and aims to launch the first games in the summer.

Interesting purchase for News Corp, which has a patchy history in new media. It owns the once mighty and now beleaguered MySpace, and recently sold Jamba/Fox after a protracted 'for sale' period.
