New iOS beta ditches iPhone 3G support for Game Center

Is Apple's gaming community focusing on new handsets?

Ever since Apple announced its plans for an Xbox Live-style games community for iPhone, iOS games developers have been buzzing about its potential.

They've also had first dibs on seeing how the community will work, since it's been integrated into developer releases of the iOS software.

Game Center will offer a platform for high-scores, achievements, friend lists and other social features when it launches to consumers.

However, it seems it may only be available to people with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, third-generation iPod touches and (presumably) iPads.

At least, the latest beta release of the iOS software alerts developers to the fact that "In this release Game Center is no longer supported on iPhone 3G and 2nd generation iPod Touch".

Apple has been open about the fact that not all the new features in iOS 4 will work on older devices - it seems Game Center is now one of those features.
