New chip from MIT to professionalise smartphone photography

Designed to save battery consumption and do the job of third party apps.

MIT's Microsystems Technology Laboratory has developed a new chip to enhance smartphone and tablet cameras. The team has anticipated common amateur problems, thus the processor will professionalise the snaps by improving lighting, capture speeds and more.

Of course, there are plenty of apps that enable post-capture tweaks, but MIT notes that the chip will do the job of the third party software, which will save time and battery power as a result. Additionally, amateur snappers won't be required to learn new tricks.

Rahul Rithe, a graduate student in MIT’s department of electrical engineering and computer science, said: "We wanted to build a single chip that could perform multiple operations, consume significantly less power compared to doing the same job in software, and do it all in real time."
