New Adobe tool puts Flash on iPhone. Sort of.

'Wallaby' converts Flash files into the HTML5 format, so they run on iOS.

This is the latest development in a ding dong between Apple and Adobe, with the former eschewing support for the Flash plug-in because of perceived battery and reliability issues.

Apple prefers HTML5 as a development environment for animation and video.

And this is the key to the new announcement.

In a brief note, Adobe said that "Wallaby" is the codename for an experimental technology that converts the artwork and animation contained in Adobe Flash Professional (FLA) files into HTML.

Once converted, the owners of the file can edit them with an HTML editing tool.

Adobe principal product manager John Nack said in a blog post: "Millions of people have honed their Web animation skills in Flash, and now their customers want content that can run anywhere, including on non-Flash-enabled devices."

Wallaby has some limitations, as a number of Flash functions like dynamic masks, 3D transforms, filters and blend modes are not supported, because of the lack of equivalents for HTML5.

This means that only basic Flash projects like ads and animations are likely to translate well.
