Deal enables Mobile Tag to create 2D barcodes for brands, opcos and the OEMs that work with NeoMedia system.
Both companies participated in the NeuStar-sponsored interoperability pilot programme at CTIA in March, and this commercial licensing agreement takes the trial to market.
It's the first contract to be announced under NeoMedia’s recently launched licensing programme. The aim of this is to create an open and interoperable ecosystem that will speed the adoption of 2D barcoding.
At present the sector is restricted by the lack of embedded barcode readers in phones and the existence of some proprietary formats that only work with the vendor's own codes.
“This deal is a critical milestone for the industry and we’re grateful that Mobile Tag stepped forward to work with us.
"It affirms that the market has realised the importance of creating a legitimate, licensed and open environment for all and I believe it marks the tipping point for rapid commercialization of mobile barcodes in the US,” said Iain McCready, CEO of NeoMedia.
