NearVerse claims its LoKast app is saving operators' bandwidth

Letting iPhone users swap content directly saves 2% of data.

NearVerse has announced that the average user of its LoKast iPhone app is redirecting 5MB of data a month that would otherwise go over the network.

The app lets people swap photos, videos and music over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, rather than sending it over the air.

The company says that the 5MB of average data consumption accounts for 2% of overall bandwidth every month - and 15% if you just count 'media sharing'.

"Early results from LoKast demonstrate that seemingly a proximity social networking app, LoKast is in fact one of the few readily available solutions for the carriers’ network congestion problems," says CEO Boris Bogatin.

"NearVerse looks forward to working with carriers to proliferate proximity-based networking apps and technology on a broader scale, in order to offload the wireless networks."

Network congestion is a hot issue at the moment: just this week, US operator AT&T announced that it's ditching its unlimited data plans, in favour of two capped offerings.

NearVerse says it's in talks with several operators about how to use its app to lighten their data load.
