NBA and MLB get sporty for iPad launch

US sports leagues on the ball for first day of Apple's tablet.

If iPad is, as it seems, the dream device for couch potatoes, then it's no surprise to see the big US sports leagues taking an interest. As they have in iPhone already.

Two biggies from iPad Day One are official basketball and baseball apps.

NBA Game Time: Courtside has been released by the NBA, and is described as a 'live game companion'.

So it doesn't let fans watch games live, but it provides all manner of stats during a match - scores, performance analytics and a diagram of who's where on the court at any one time.

It's launching to tie in with the NBA playoffs, and there will be a video element: highlights before and after games, as well as at half-time. The app is free.

At Bat 2010 for iPad comes from Major League Baseball (MLB), and DOES offer live games to watch, albeit only for subscribers to the online MLB.TV service.

However, everyone else gets a 'Live Game simulation', showing real-time pitches as animations, as well as more stats than you can shake a (round-ended) stick at.

There are also in-game highlights and live audio broadcasts to keep fans in touch with the action. The app costs $14.99, and will be updated regularly during the baseball season.
