New player in the UK D2C space as US-based ad-funded content portal opens for business.
Myxer.co.uk is pitching its service to both advertisers and independent record labels as a way of getting in front of a targeted audience. The company claims to have 4.5 million users in the US, generating 10 million mobile downloads a month from a catalog of over 275,000 ringtones, wallpapers, videos and images including 13,000 indie bands and labels. Phew.
Interestingly, it would appear Myxer builds its catalogue based on technology that transcodes existing web content for mobile, then makes it available via either a WAP site, SMS or the Myxer website.
Appropriately enough, Myxer has installed Ian England as its UK MD to focus on expanding the Myxer catalogue to include more UK-based bands and labels, as well as working with local advertisers.
England said: "People want to be able to take the things they care about most with them wherever they go and they want it to be easy. At Myxer, we think it should be too, so we created a business that leverages the best of the Internet and mobile to make digital content simple to share and access anywhere you are."
