Myxer hails BlackBerry growth in the US

RIM smartphones took a 63% share of its visits in March.

US mobile content firm Myxer has published its latest BoomBox report, which breaks out some of the stats from its 33 million-strong audience.

The latest report trumpets the importance of BlackBerry, which took a 63% share of visits to Myxer's service in March - up from 58% a year ago.

Android is the second most popular platform with a 17% share, up from 7% in March last year. Windows Mobile dropped from 21% to 10% in the same period.

iPhone takes a 4% share, followed by Symbian and Palm's webOS, which take less than a 2% share between them.

Of course, these stats say much more about Myxer's customer base than they do about the relative popularity of those various smartphone platforms - although BlackBerry is the biggest in the US.

Myxer says BlackBerry devices accounted for 72% of its 22 million smartphone content downloads in March, followed by Android's 14% and Windows Mobile's 7%.

iPhone users are clearly getting most of their downloads from iTunes and the App Store, while Symbian isn't big in the US, and thus isn't big for Myxer's audience.

"With BlackBerry users downloading 16 million pieces of mobile content a month and growing, Myxer represents one of the largest communities of RIM users in the world," says CEO Myk Willis.

"Despite what you may hear or read about in the press, RIM’s audience still dominates across the US, and far surpasses iPhone and Android in a number of important categories."

But then, if 72% of your downloads came from a single smartphone platform, you'd probably say nice things about it too...
