MWC: Vodafone chooses Opera for emerging market browsing

Opera will make a custom-made version of its Opera Mini browser for Vodafone.

It will be available in Vodafone markets across Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa, and is pitched at customers in developing countries who are likely to experience the internet for the first time through a low end Java phone. Web pages are compressed by up to 90 per cent to make browsing possible in low network speed areas. In early trials in Vodafone Egypt, more than 400,000 customers downloaded the product in a month.

The icon-based display will be easy to personalise, and there'll be an easy zoom in and out feature which automatically fits the mobile screen. Selected handsets will be able to view video content from sites such as YouTube.
