MWC: Universal mobile chargers on the way

It's not mobile content, but we all know how fast games can drain handset batteries...

The days of having a dozen useless Nokia chargers when all you need is a Sony Ericsson could be coming to an end, with 17 big industry names coming together to agree a universal micro USB standard.

Orange, Telefonica, Vodafone, 3, AT&T, Mobilkom Austria, T-Mobile, Telenor Telstra, Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, LG and Sony Ericsson are all part of the initiative, which is led by the GSM Association.

The move is being pitched as eco-friendly, with the GSMA estimating that energy-efficient chargers will result in a 50 per cent reduction in standby energy consumption and the potential elimination of up to 51,000 tonnes of duplicate charger waste.

If all goes to plan, by the January 1st 2012 the majority of all new mobile phones will support a universal charging connector and the majority of chargers shipped will meet the high efficiency targets set out by the OMTP (Open Mobile Terminal Platform).

Rob Conway, CEO and Member of the Board of the GSMA, said: "There is enormous potential in mobile to help people live and work in an eco-friendly way and with the backing of some or the biggest names in the industry, this initiative will lead the way."
