Content store will be embedded on all handsets shipped with the new Windows Mobile 6.5 OS.
Microsoft has used Mobile World Congress to launch a host of wireless products, led by an updated version of its OS and the much-anticipated Windows Marketplace for Mobile. The Windows Mobile 6.5 home screen offers what Microsoft calls a "dashboard-like experience" for items such as new e-mails, texts, missed calls and calendar appointments. It also includes an "improved" touch-screen interface and will start shipping on handsets in the second half of this year.
Moreover, the new operating system includes Windows Marketplace for Mobile (previously known as Skymarket), an integrated marketplace for searching, browsing and purchasing mobile applications from a handset or PC using a Windows Live ID.
The marketplace will be included with all phones based on Windows Mobile 6.5, which Microsoft says will help consumers to easily find and install the apps.
Content providers will be able to offer applications to customers through the marketplace via a security and compatibility check from Microsoft. No details yet on price points, revenue shares, etc.
