MWC: 4G mobile trials hailed as success

China Mobile, Verizon Wireless and Vodafone take 'significant steps' towards LTE deployment.

The partners say they have successfully demonstrated in lab conditions the time division version of LTE (TD-LTE), showing that the technology is capable of operating effectively in both unpaired as well as paired spectrum.

In plain English that means there will soon be mobile broadband so fast it'll create a rumble in the Force every time someone turns on their handset or laptop - around 50-60 Mbps in fact.

The trials are a step towards the goal of developing a single device capable of operating on TD-LTE technology in the case of unpaired spectrum or LTE FDD technology in the case of paired spectrum.

LTE is an evolution of existing 3G (WCDMA, TD-SCDMA and CDMA) cellular networks and has the advantage of offering inter-working with existing 3G technologies.

Other technologies are competing for the super-fast mobile broadband crown, however, led by WiMAX (which has its roots in Wi-Fi rather than cellular technology).
