MWC 2010 set for Planet of the Apps

It's about time the show jumped onto the mobile applications bandwagon.

Next year's Mobile World Congress will feature a new event called App Planet, showcasing on mobile applications and app stores.

It'll be held in Hall 7 - traditionally the home of mobile content at MWC - and will include conference sessions, an exhibition of apps, and a networking-focused App Lounge.

Organiser the GSM Association says the event will "present a unique opportunity to explore the many dimensions of the dynamic and critically important mobile applications market".

According to this PDF document, the GSMA is seeking three main sponsors for the event, as well as a separate sponsor for the App Lounge.

It's a sensible move. Not only will it mean iPhone has more of a presence at the show in Apple's absence, but it capitalises on the current apps mania within the mobile industry.

However, the success of App Planet will depend on the details: if the price to exhibit is too high and prices out indie developers, it runs the risk of failing to deliver on its promise of a showcase for truly cutting-edge apps.
