MWC 2010: Omnifone takes MusicStation to Android

Subscription music service shown off on Nexus One and HTC handsets.

UK mobile music firm Omnifone has unveiled an Android client for its MusicStation digital music service.

The company is showing its Android app off at Mobile World Congress, which kicks off today in Barcelona. It's currently running on Google's Nexus One handset, as well as other HTC Android phones.

The app lets users search for music and get recommendations from Omnifone's 6.5-million-strong catalogue, then download it for storage and listening on their handset.

However, the company is touting the new version as being eminently customisable by operators, handset makers and other application developers, thanks to its MusicStation Android API Suite.

"The popularity and growth of the Android platform will be substantial," says CEO Rob Lewis.

"Omnifone is delighted to be able to deliver the richest and most sophisticated music capability on mobile, and one that will work effortlessly on any manufacturer’s Android device."

It's worth stressing that this isn't a D2C service. The Android MusicStation app will only be offered by operators or handset makers, rather than by Omnifone itself on the Android Market.
