mSpot debuts streaming mobile movies service

Stump up with a credit card and watch films in your handset browser.

Mobile entertainment firm mSpot has launched its new Mobile Movies service, which lets film fans stream movies via their handset browser.

It's launching with a catalogue of more than 350 films, and will work on 30 smartphones initially, including iPhone, Android, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile devices.

Users pay $4.99 to rent an individual movie for a set time, or can choose to subscribe for $9.99, $12.99 or $15.99 a month - which lets them watch an increasing number of films.

Paramount, Universal and The Weinstein Company have already signed up to make their movies available through the service, which will focus mainly on new films rather than archive flicks.

The service looks set to provide competition for Apple's iTunes Store on the iPhone. mSpot will be hoping the new site helps boost its paid subscriber numbers, which passed six million in June this year.
