Mozilla reveals Firefox Home iPhone app

Gives users access to their recent bookmarks and tabs.

Mozilla's Firefox browser is coming to the iPhone. Sort of. In the form of an application called Firefox Home, which will soon be submitted to Apple for approval.

As Mozilla explains, the app isn't a fully-fledged browser. Instead, it connects iPhone users to the data from their desktop version of Firefox.

"It gives iPhone users instant access to their Firefox browsing history, bookmarks and the set of tabs from their most recent browser session," explains a blog post.

"What’s more, it provides Firefox “Awesome Bar” capability that enables people to get to their favorite web sites with minimal typing."

The app will be free, and Mozilla says the data will be "encrypted end-to-end" as it zings between people's PCs, Mozilla's servers and their iPhones.

"For devices or platforms where we’re unable to provide the “full” Firefox browser (either technically or due to policy), we aim to provide users with “on the go” instant access to their personal Firefox history, bookmarks and open tabs on their iPhones, giving them another reason to keep loving Firefox on their desktops," explains the blog post.

Does this mean Mozilla won't be releasing a full version of Firefox? Seemingly so. Opera managed to get its Opera Mini browser onto the App Store, but Mozilla is taking an alternative approach.

The company has published a video demo of the new app:
