Motorola reveals 2m smartphone sales for Q4 2009

And it's making a 'direct to consumer' Android handset for Google...

Motorola has announced its financial results for the fourth quarter of 2009, revealing sales for its Mobile Devices division of $1.8 billion - down 22% year-on-year.

However, the division narrowed its operating loss from $595 million to $132 million in the same period.

It seems that Android may not have caused the instant revival in Motorola's fortunes that some experts had predicted.

The company launched its Cliq/Dext handset, then the hugely-hyped Droid/Milestone during Q4, and says it shipped two million smartphones (i.e. those two) during Q4.

However, co-CEO Sanjay Jha stressed that this was just the beginning. "Our first Android smartphone devices have been very well received," he said.

"We look forward to broadening our handset portfolio in 2010 with the launch of at least 20 smartphone devices around the world and continued evolution of our MOTOBLUR service."

Meanwhile, on the follow-up conference call with analysts, Jha announced that one of those smartphones will be be a "direct to consumer device with Google" - a follow-up to the HTC-made Nexus One handset, presumably.

"We expect to ship between 11 million to 14 million smartphones over the course of the year, with smartphones accounting for over 50% of our total sales this year," said Jha during the call.
