Motorola: 'No plans for an app store'

If you want an app for your Dext, says Moto, it's Google Android for you.

Motorola may be on the comeback trail, but it's not joining the rush to build its own app store.

Even though just about every one of its rivals - Apple, Nokia, Samsung, LG, Sony Ericsson and RIM - has its own app platform, Moto's new Dext device links users only to Android Market.

In an interview with ME, Tom Satchwell, Motorola's director of international marketing, said there are no immediate plans to build a bespoke Moto destination.

However, he did reiterate that the firm's MOTODEV developer programme remains very much alive. Indeed, in the summer the firm announced the launch of advanced Android development resources through MOTODEV, including a new 'App Accelerator Program' and 'MOTODEV Studio for Android Beta'.

The programme is intended to accelerate the development of apps specifically for Motorola’s flavour of Android.

Satchwell also promised that there's still plenty of form factor innovation to come from Moto, in response to accusations that the new Dext looks a little like everything else - with its touchscreen and pull-out QWERTY.

"Motorola has a history of production innovation in terms of the look and feel of the device, from the Startec to the Razr. That will absolutely continue.

"The Dext is just the start of a long road for us, and we have some amazing products to come that will bring genuinely fresh new ideas into the market."

The Dext was unveiled last week, with the primary focus being on its MOTOBLUR interface, which sits on top of the Android OS and aggregates social networking feeds and content.

Orange UK has revealed its plans to offer Motorola's new Android-powered Dext handset for free to customers... if they sign up to a 24-month contract.
