Shipped 8.5m phones in Q1, down from 14.7m a year ago.
Overall, the company reported a profit of $69 million, but this was propped up by the home division.
The phone unit posted a nine per cent decline in revenue and an operating loss of $192 million in the quarter. It reported an operating loss of $22 for each of the phones it shipped.
This is a bit alarming as Motorola is basing its future around mobile devices – especially smartphones such as the Droid, which has been heavily marketed in the US in particular.
The company said it sold 2.3 million smartphones in Q1, up from two million in the fourth quarter.
Motorola believes smartphone shipments will rise in the second quarter and that the mobile division will post a profit by the end of the year.

It is now the world’s eighth-largest phone manufacturer, down from fifth-largest in the fourth quarter.
